Was bedeutet ein nachhaltiger Lifestyle für aware_ und wie kann unsere Membership dazu beitragen?

 Wir bei aware_ finden, dass sich ein nachhaltiger Lifestyle dadurch auszeichnet, dass soziale, ökologische und ökonomische Aspekte im Einklang existieren. Wir wollen mit dieser Definition einen positiven Mehrwert für alle schaffen, für jeden Menschen und den Planeten. Wir stellen einen langfristigen Erfolg über kurzfristigen Profit und schaffen dadurch nicht nur Produkte, sondern auch Systeme, Prozesse, Infrastrukturen und Dienstleistungen, die eine Grundlage für nachhaltigen Lifestyle schaffen.

Einfacher gesagt: die Outcomes, die sich durch unsere Membership ergeben – sei es durch Impulse, durch interdisziplinäre / interindustrielle Workshops oder Kooperationen innerhalb des aware_ Ökosystems – sollen dazu dienen, so mit der Umwelt, ihren Ressourcen und allen Lebewesen umzugehen, dass auch die nachfolgenden Generationen einen intakten Lebensraum vorfinden.

aware_ hat es sich zur Aufgabe gemacht, gemeinsam mit den Membern der Komplexität des Planeten, der Verbindung verschiedener Ökosysteme und der enormen Diversität Sorge zu tragen. Wir stellen den Nutzen unserer Leistungen und Outcomes in den Vordergrund und achten darauf, dass Ressourcen so schonend wie möglich eingesetzt werden und dass die Produkte / Dienstleistungen / Strukturen zukunftsorientiert, innovativ und überdauernd sind. Mit unseren Lösungen, die wir kreieren, betrachten wir den kompletten Journey / Lebensweg eines Produkts / einer Dienstleistung / einer Struktur. Wir wenden dieses Prinzip auf alle Entwicklungsstufen an: von der Ideenfindung, Planung, Entwicklung, Produktion, Vermarktung, Verpackung, Vertrieb, Nutzung, sogar bis zur Entsorgung oder Verwertung.

Wir haben die aware_ Charta entwickelt, um eine Guideline für uns und unsere Member zu schaffen, innerhalb der wir unser Handeln definieren. Wir bekennen uns dazu ökologisch, fair und trotzdem wirtschaftlich erfolgreich zu arbeiten. Zusammengefasst besagt die aware_ Charta, dass wir Verantwortung für uns selbst und gegenüber unseren Membern tragen sowie gegenüber unserer Umwelt. Gleichzeitig geben wir diese Verantwortung weiter an unsere Member und bekennen uns dazu, innerhalb der Charta Guidelines gemeinsam in eine nachhaltige Zukunft zu steuern. Wir bekennen uns zu der Verantwortung für einen nachhaltigen Umgang mit Ressourcen, mit der Umwelt und mit Menschen. Wir, unsere Member und die durch unsere Membership kreierten Outcomes müssen dieser Verantwortung gerecht werden. Nachhaltigkeit ist ein Prozess und wir streben eine langfristige Verbesserung bereits vorhandener Produkte, Prozesse und Strukturen an. Die aware_ Charta listet unter den Leitpunkten auf, welche Kriterien berücksichtigt werden müssen, um unserer Idee von Nachhaltigkeit entsprechen zu können. So sollen gemeinsam kreierten Lösungen:

Sozial verträglich oder sozial nachhaltig meint, dass die Arbeits- und Lebensbedingungen der am Produkt / Service beteiligten Menschen fair gestaltet werden. Keine Lebensräume von Menschen und Tieren sollen angegriffen werden. Faire Löhne und Arbeitsbedingungen sind Voraussetzung. Kinderarbeit und gesundheitsgefährdende Arbeitsbedingungen sind ein Tabu. Dies haben wir in unserem aware_ Code of Conduct formuliert.



Sustainability Criteria

How we select our products:

In addition to their sense of aesthetics, all selected brands have one or two things in common: their fundamental desire to reduce their impact on our environment and to create change in their industry. We know that sustainability and consumption do not easily go hand in hand, but in the curation of our products we place great value on selecting brands that have anchored transparency, circular economy and environmental awareness in their brand core.

The products we present are carefully curated and held accountable to at least two of our sustainability criteria:

Fairtrade products guarantee fair and safe conditions for workers and exclude child labor. With prices above the world market level, Fairtrade leads, among other things, to the livelihood of many small farmers and, through the Fairtrade premium, makes it possible to build schools, for example.

Fair & Social can also be production within the framework of a social project, for example a workshop for the disabled.

Durable products are characterized by robust materials and their durability. Thanks to their timeless design and high value, they have a life expectancy that outlives normal product and trend cycles.

Products which are manufactured using low-pollutant or non-pollutant components in production.

Reduction of pollutants through natural ingredients: 

  • Wood products treated with water-based lacquers or biological oils & waxes 
  • Hygiene products on natural basis
  • Textiles dyed with natural plant substances etc.


Products that can be repaired which extends the product’s life.

We work with brands that use materials that have the least possible impact on the planet. These are natural fibers, such as organic cotton, linen and hemp. In addition, there are new innovations that focus on recycled and man-made fibers such as recycled polyester, recycled wool, etc., which reduce dependence on the earth’s natural resources.

The clothing industry and especially the denim industry, uses a huge amount of water to manufacture goods. Processes such as dyeing and coloring fabrics, washing denims, printing designs, all require a huge amount of water. We focus on brands that are reducing the amount of water usage with new innovations or Impact Measuring Systems.

These products have ingredients that are present in or occur in nature which are directly extracted by using simple methods or chemical reactions that can happen naturally using biology. The ingredients do not contain anything synthetic or artificial including colours, flavours or synthetic preservatives.

In production, renewable raw materials are an important factor in the conservation of resources. Some of these raw materials, such as bamboo, linen or hemp, are used in many different ways.

Sustainable packaging is the development and use of packaging that leads to improved sustainability. This includes the increased use of life cycle assessments and life cycle analysis to support the use of packaging that reduces environmental impact and ecological footprint.

  • Specific factors for sustainable packaging design may include:
  • Use of minimal materials – reduced packaging, reduced packaging layers, reduced mass (product to packaging ratio), reduced volume, etc.
  • Energy efficiency, total energy content and consumption, use of renewable energy, use of clean energy, etc.
  • Recycled content – where available and functional. There are special safety considerations for food contact materials, especially when using recycled plastic and paper. Regulations are published by each country or region.
  • Recyclability – recovery value, use of materials that can be frequently and easily recycled, reduction of materials that hinder recyclability of major components, etc.
  • Reusable packaging – repeated reuse of packaging, reuse for other purposes, etc.
  • Use of renewable, biodegradable and compostable materials – when practical and does not cause contamination of the recycling stream.
  • Avoiding the use of materials that are toxic to humans or the environment.

Whether it’s a cause, a specific non-profit organization, or a community, each of these ethical & sustainable brands dedicates a portion of their profits to something more than the brand itself. With every purchase you make, a percentage goes towards a mission they care deeply about. This can be planting a tree or donating to a social project.

Many leading brands in the beauty industry test on animals. Animal testing is often very dangerous and painful, causing the suffering and even death of millions of animals every year. With the Cruelty-Free category, we make sure that none of the products we carry have ever been tested on animals and therefore the manufacturing is free of animal testing.

We select products that are made in Germany (and/or Europe) which reduces the amount of CO2 emissions caused by long routes throughout production and distribution. It also supports artisans, manufactures and the local economy by securing jobs.



Code of Conduct


Our business aims at social and environmental sustainability not only for our own operations but also with respect to our partners, as well as across the wider supply chain. We live up to certain standards and seek continuous improvement for ourselves and the environment. The approach of responsible, respectful and thoughtful behavior applies also to our partners. The aware_ Partner Code of Conduct (aware_CoC) outlines the basic principles governing the cooperation with our partners.


The products we create within aware_ or in cooperation with our partners shall contribute to the wealth of our planet, its resources and living organisms to ensure a safe and sound habitat. Products shall be designed to meet the complexity of our planet’s interconnected ecosystems and diversity. They shall favor the long-term gain over short-term profit and consider the entire life cycle. Please read our aware_ Charta for further information.


We represent a diverse and respectful community in which any form of discrimination is not accepted. In particular, no person shall be disadvantaged on the grounds of their age, gender, sexual orientation, disability, nationality, ethnic background, race, skin color, religion or ideology, political persuasion, social background or marital status. We operate on the basis of fair treatment.

It shall be ensured that no rough or cruel treatment occurs in the workplace. This particularly includes sexual harassment, corporal punishment, mental and physical coercion and the verbal abuse of employees. No such conduct may be threatened against employees either.

We take for granted that our partners comply with all applicable laws, requirements and industry standards relating to appropriate wages and working hours.

Wages and other benefits must, at the very least, comply with legal requirements and the standards applicable to the local production industry. They must be clearly defined and paid and/or provided at regular intervals. The aim is to pay wages and other benefits that will cover the cost of living to the extent that the statutory minimum wage is insufficient in this regard. Any deductions for non-cash benefits shall only be permitted provided they are limited in scope and reasonable compared to the value of the non-cash benefit. The business partner shall pay the social security contributions required by law and the benefits to which employees are entitled under national law (e.g., insurance benefits, overtime pay and paid leave).

We respect the working hours defined by local law. 

Official public holidays shall be observed. In addition, employees may not be regularly asked to work more than 48 hours per week and, including overtime, more than 60 hours per week. Overtime must be performed voluntarily and must be remunerated separately in accordance with national law or with compensatory time. Every employee is entitled to at least one day off after six consecutive workdays. Our partners are committed to the right to freedom of association. Employees have the right to hold meetings in accordance with applicable laws and to establish or join unions and representative bodies. Employees also have the right to engage in collective bargaining in order to resolve workplace and wage issues. Under no circumstances may the exercise of such rights be met with threats of reprisal.

Our partners ensure a safe working environment.

Workplaces and work equipment must comply with applicable laws and requirements. Any violations of human rights in the workplace and in operational facilities shall be prohibited. In particular, fire safety and emergency care standards must also be complied with.

Disciplinary action shall be in accordance with national law and internationally recognized human rights. 

No unreasonable disciplinary action may be taken, particularly including withholding pay, social security contributions or documents (e.g., identification cards) or placing a ban on leaving the workplace. The business partner shall also respect its employees’ right of termination.

Our partners strongly reject child labour from direct and indirect supply chains and comply with requirements relating to the protection of minors. The minimum employment age may not be lower than the legal school leaving age. Under no circumstances may employees be younger than 15 years of age, or 14 years of age if permitted under national law pursuant to ILO Convention 138.


Our partners are committed to protect the environment and comply with applicable environmental laws and regulations, as amended from time to time. 

The business partner’s operations shall meet waste regulations, emission control and water protection standards and requirements. The business partner shall comply with all regulations relating to hazardous substances. This particularly concerns the storage, handling and disposal of hazardous substances. 

Environmental harm shall be avoided to the extent reasonably possible. Protection of the environment, climate and promoting biodiversity is an ongoing process which can only be met by consistently improving the level of protection, achieved by permanently reducing the consumption of resources, level of pollution and emissions and reducing waste.

Supply Chain

The Guidelines outlined above are applicable to the direct operations of our business partners and their supply chains. As sustainability is a complex field we need to incorporate the complexity of our economic system and we need to be aware of our direct and indirect impact.

In event of any breach of the guidelines provided in this Code of Conduct, our partners may be given a reasonable period within which to remedy the breach or, if this is not possible due to the nature of the breach, may be issued with a notice of breach. If a partner fails to remedy the breach within the set period or repeatedly breaches the Code of Conduct, the agreement may be terminated without notice. In the case of repeated or serious breaches, the agreement may be terminated without notice, without setting a grace period or issuing a notice of breach. Further rights, particularly any potential claim for damages, shall remain unaffected. furthermore comply with all professional standards applicable in the industry in which it operates.

Bribery and any other forms of corruption are prohibited. The business partner shall furthermore comply with all professional standards applicable in the industry in which it operates.


The principles outlined in this aware_CoC act as minimum standards for our business relationships. The Code is based on the following international guidelines and principles:

  • Paris Climate Agreement 

In addition to the principles contained in this Code of Conduct, national and other relevant laws and requirements applicable in the countries in which business is conducted must be complied with. Whatever applicable rules or regulations are best suited to achieve the protective purpose, those shall always be controlling.

The standards set within this Code of Conduct shall be implemented and monitored by appropriate company procedures.
