What is circular economy? How does the framework contribute to global emissions reduction?

An introduction to the business value of the circular economy, why we should stop wasting finite resources, and a reflection on value chains and why they should be transformed into value networks. Finally, business impact of the circular economy along the value chain will be addressed.

Karel Gotta

Circular Design

What is circular design and how is it applied?

Focusing on circular design and upstream and downstream innovations. While diving into different circular design methods such as eco-design and cradle to cradle, the role and importance of the intersection of data and AI in circular design will be highlighted through best practice examples of circular materials and their use cases.

A best practice example of the sustainable smartphone manufacturer Fairphone, introducing its business model, circular supply chain and learnings for the consumer electronics industry. Highlighting the impact of a product along the value chain of a design process involving multiple stakeholders, and opportunities for transparency and measurable KPIs to drive systematic change.

Big Picture Climate Change

What is climate change? What scenarios should we expect if the world warms by 1.5°C, 2°C or even 4°C?

Presented are the likelihood of these scenarios, different levels of possible catastrophes, climate risks, and tipping points associated with each scenario. In this context, the tipping points that mark the planetary boundaries and the consequences we face as organizations and individuals will be discussed. Learn more about the planetary boundaries of global warming as a result of greenhouse gas emissions and places where we are seeing climate change and global warming in particular today.

Dr Nikolaus Borowski

Recycling

What are the main recycling technologies? What will recycling look like in the future?

A holistic insight into technologies, materials, general waste streams and the main challenges of recycling, up- and downcycling. Further discussed will be how recycling looks like today in the EU and Global North as well as challenges and hurdles the recycling industry is currently facing in the Global South.

Finally, the future of recycling is spotlighted in the context of circularity and a circular economy to provide a further outlook on the current politics and regulations and what is to be seen for the recycling industry in the upcoming future.

Energy

What are the different forms of energy? What are critical interdependencies in the energy system? What does it actually take for successful decarbonization?

The energy network is examined and it is analyzed how the central energy suppliers are structured and divided into individual sectors.

Chiel Borenstein

GHG Emissions

What are greenhouse gas emissions and why are they so relevant to global warming? How are these emissions being tracked?

Human activities are responsible for nearly all of the increase in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere over the past 150 years. In this context, the reason companies need to reduce their carbon footprint as well as the importance of monitoring carbon emissions in scopes 1, 2, and 3 (as defined by the GHG Protocol) will be demonstrated to ultimately outline a plan and possible solutions to help companies become carbon neutral in the future using a best vs. worst practice example.

Nicolas Steinbacher

Energy Ecosystems

What is an innovative, ESG-compliant energy ecosystem? Learn about benefits that can thus occur for environment, national economy – and policy making and political regulations. A best practice example from Northvolt is provided for implementation in other industries and also in our own environment.

Social Entrepreneurship & Innovation

What is social entrepreneurship? And what is a non-profit organization?

Both legal forms and structures of these types of organizations will be differentiated, accompanied by concrete examples and objectives by Viva con Agua, to finally be set in relation with the SDGs and what this means for building a business or a brand.

It follows an introduction of the story of the NGO Love the Oceans and how it got built into what it is today. Given the importance of community involvement and community-led initiatives, a connection is established to capacity building and respect for culture to address the threats to international NGOs. Here, the focus lies on why there should be no “parachute science” and why holistic protection is the only way to create lasting change.
